The Enderby Group comprises a number of family owned businesses providing a variety of goods and services to the local business and rural community.

The foundation for our group of businesses started with the ‘farming business’ which was set up in 1972 by Dan and Sally Enderby. In its original form, the farm was essentially a mixed farm producing a variety of crops coupled with both a beef and sheep enterprise. The farm continued in this way until James left school in 1991 to work on the farm and Sally set up an equestrian business in about 1994.

In 1997 Dan and James developed a farm contracting business (DJ & SJ Enderby) to service the needs of local farmers and to develop their expertise handling Northumbria Water’s biodegradable waste streams. The business expanded rapidly until 2001 when the outbreak of foot and mouth curtailed a number of their activities. In 2003 the business developed further to specialise in the disposal of farm slurry, to provide muck spreading services and to provide a septic tank disposal service.

In 2003 James established a new business specialising in recycling biodegradable wastes and so DJ & SJ Recycling was borne. This enterprise was very much a ‘brokerage’ business sourcing waste streams to recycle and finding suitable outlets to dispose of the waste. An exempt green recycling site was set up at Codlaw to handle green and food wastes and as demand grew James assisted other farmers to set up similar exempt sites. Demand continued to grow and it became clear that if we were serious about recycling green waste a fully fledged, licensed waste disposal site would need to be set up.

A suitable site was identified on the farm and the hard work started. Plans were drawn up to obtain planning permission, to apply for an Environment Agency licence and to source suitable grant funding. Eventually in 2006 planning permission was granted, a license obtained to process 25,000 tonnes of green waste and funding assistance was received from Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP). The recycling site has developed both wholesale and retail markets for the compost being processed on the site.

To assist in the management of the various businesses James studied to obtain a Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board (WAMITAB) certificate of competence which was awarded in 2007.

Going forward the Group is well placed to delivery a quality service in the ever changing and demanding rural economy.
